ππ°π Experience Gibraltar:
Adventure at the Gateway between Europe and Africa π’π
Gibraltar,
a place full of surprising π and fascinating π² features, is located at the southern end π of the Iberian Peninsula. Gibraltar is not only known for its strategic location but also for some quirky peculiarities.
Let’s start with Gibraltar Airport π§β π One of the remarkable features of the airport βπ§ is the fact that the runway π«π¬ crosses the border between Gibraltar and Spain. Pedestrians have to walk across the rather short runway πββπ¬πββπ« to commute between Gibraltar and Spain, making the airport truly unique.
Our campsite ποΈ was located in the marina βπ₯οΈβ΅ of La Linea de la ConcepciΓ³n. Gibraltar was within walking distance for us π One reason why we crossed the airport βπ§ several times to see the monkeys πππ in Gibraltar π
Speaking of π΅π΅ monkeys π The Rock πͺ¨, as it is affectionately called, is another landmark of Gibraltar. This rock πͺ¨ is home to a population of Barbary macaques π΅ππ΅, the only wild monkeys living freely in Europe. An old legend says that as long as the monkeys π΅π live in Gibraltar, the Rock πͺ¨ will remain British.
Another aspect of Gibraltar is the spectacular meeting π€ of the Atlantic Ocean π and the Mediterranean Sea π. These two “great waters” π meet at Gibraltar, creating fascinating contrasts in the ocean currents. The different salt contents and temperatures π‘οΈ of the two seas play a crucial role.
Not to be forgotten: The legendary Strait of Gibraltar separates Europe from Africa and is a strategic chokepoint. From Gibraltar, the coast of Morocco is visible π. At the narrowest point, Gibraltar is only 14 kilometers away from Africa.
We really, really enjoyed being here ππ
